To 1st ME at 10:30. Cold. AA worried me so about the dinner, but she will be in the kitchen all the time I am there and runs around all the time I cook. To Jesses for an hour or so in p.m. and to church with AA and Eva at Christian church in evening. Florence Ohl and her hubby there. Not feeling a bit good about my heart.

Monday 5, warmer. A little. Uptown to mail letter and got can of Herno. Did not have pocketbook along when I went to pay for it, so had to come home for it. Made swiss steak for dinner. A.A. bound to help all the time. I made 4 quilt blocks for Pavonia comforter, and took them to Jesses for Emma to take home with her. Had a nice little visit with Emma and the little ones. A.A. up to market while I was gone and got some hominy when I had just made a lot of mush, and some bacon when we had some then lost her pocketbook and went back to hunt it, but did not find it. Poor old body she is not fit to do such things. I do not know how much money she lost. Neither does she. After supper about 7:00 Lizzie came as Win came to Wigle's to get her hair curled. Sick with my heart again -- miserable.

Tues -- sick with heart when I wakened at 5. Slept no more. A.A. came in nearly 10, but did not stay. I got up with an effort & tried to get Esther, Anna, Ede, and Jess. Got Jess and told her to try Esther, then I tried again all round and got Anna and told I'd have to go somewhere where I could lie still for a few days and rest my heart. She and Esther conferred together, then Ed and Anna came at 1:30 and brought me to Esther's where I went to bed, I called Dr. Shafer about 11, but he did not come until after 12:30. Jess came about 2 for a minute.

To 1st ME with AA. Thank offering for WHMS gave one dollar – wore new hat – home – got dinner – slept an hour or more and felt miserable for it. Rather a lonesome day – had nothing of interest to read – Jess called toward evening to see where I was going to church – AA and I to Christian church in evening – Ede and Hadley there [illegible] evening, till after 10 – have had no ambition all day. Read nothing but the "News" and do not get much profit from that. Two good sermons to think of, but my thinker no good tonight.

Monday got ready for Will Baker to paper the dining room ceiling as he had promised to do today, but as he was not here at 10 o'clock I went to Jesses to take all home her pie pan and got my Plain Dealer's and show her the dress Martha sent for Audrey & which I had on. She brought out an old jacket suit she wants made into a dress. If she were only as easy to suit as the other people. I would not care, but oh! how I dread to help her, she is so particular. I told her so and she said she wasn't, and seemed sold to think that I thot so. She's like Ethel so afraid it will not look just right. When I came home Will Baker was here to look things over and will come tomorrow. Worked on Audrey's dress and she came a little after four to see about it. When I went down with her Mabel and Edna were here. Win here a little while to bring records she had. Wrote to Bess and worked on Audrey's dress. Lots warmer.

Tuesday, November 22 Will B came about 9. Got the ceiling on and plastered the bathroom, ready for painting. I sewed a while on Audrey's dress, then got dinner and after dinner cleaned the dining room. AA beat the rugs poor old lady! Perhaps I should have helped her, but I thought she was as able as I perhaps. She was too tired to try to help with the rest of the cleaning. When I finished cleaning I sewed on Audrey stress until Esther came with hat stuff about 4, then got supper and wrote another sheet to Bess as I failed to get the letter mailed today. Will put one coat of paint on the bathroom – Mrs. Gugler her came for me to mark the apron for embroidery. Ede tried to get me to but someone took down the receiver every time before I got here. Ate too much supper.

Wed. Was quite sick last night with my heart until after midnight, then slept till morning, but was sick again when I got up. Not able to go to Frances' wedding, real sick all day with heart. Did nothing but sit around, talk on phone and get dinner for AA and me and not eat much myself. Went up to P.O. to mail Bess' letter and wanted to take library books back was not able for the elevation. Went to market for meat -- soup bone -- bread, oranges and sugar. Letter from Marce in p.m. Answered right away and sent for Dorothy to take it to
P.O. and to take the books to the library gave her my old umbrella.

Nov. 24 Thanksgiving -- Sslept pretty well and was better until after dinner then was miserable for an hour or so, and again at five o'clock, so sent for Dr. Shafer on the spur of the moment he came right over and seemed very nice. Gave me three kinds of medicine and told me that if I got sick again to "yell" and he'd come right over. $2 for the call. AA to girls for Thanksgiving dinner, Hazel came for her at 11:15. She did not get it into her head that this was the day she was going until she went to Charles about 10, and they said something about it, then she came hurrying home and asked me why I had not told her it was Thursday when she was thinking it was Tuesday. I had told her a couple of times that it was Thanksgiving. Once when she was looking for mail and again when she wanted to go uptown to get it corset, but I never thought that she did not realize it. Poor old lady! Wrote to Ad and Dr. Shafer mailed it for me.

Friday got up at 830 – Jess called soon – also Lizzie – went down to breakfast & Grace called me up, then Mrs. Gugler called me down and seemed pleased that their Dr. have helped me. Then, Sarah Scott called me up again. Called Jess to bring me a loaf of bread – she brought it at 4:00. Had been to Guglers she said. Mrs. G. calls me "Tat" and told her that Aunt Lou had talked very nice to her about me. "The Bunch" was at Sidney's for Thanksgiving dinner. Mrs. G told me all about it this a.m. Rena Simmons here to see AA, then George and Clarence Simmons came on their way from the Bell ringers concert at 1st M. E. I'd like to go tonight, but am trying to be sensible. Am lots better today and want to stay that way. Mrs. Burkholder here at 6:45 to take my concert ticket for another woman. I'm so glad she sold it. AA ready for bed when she came and went soon after, before seven. Came in here a while & sat to tell me things. After she had gone to bed, about 7:30 Florence Hughes called to know whether I would like to go to the concert on her ticket and said George would come after me, I was glad as I felt able enough, only the walk up there, Miner & Mae along concert fine.

Saturday, November 26 – got up about 9. Slept more hours than for a long time, breakfast, about 10 dinner about 12:30. I slept a little while in my chair after dinner, Jess came with some books – for some thing of mine to read. Esther came while she was here and brought me a good pair of Mary's shoes -- black suede – just about my size, needed them. AA and got to Finefrocks opening at 6:30, everything fine. Ede and Hadley home with us – cut his hair. The Elmer Charles to see AA.
Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08588165782868985652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114664690307155555.post-46924443129776304682011-05-14T20:49:00.000-04:002011-05-14T20:49:28.849-04:00Nov 13 - 19, 1927
Sun. Nov. 13. A.A. and I to 1st M. E. Her first trip since her sickness. Seemed to stand the walk fairly well. She started home with Summers' to go there for dinner, so I went with Esther. Ethel home with me at 6 to go to Christian church. A.A. not here when we got here, but soon came with Eva to go to church with her. Had not gone home with Summers' after all. She had a box of candy, special delivery from Artie Dickson. I spoke to Edna yesterday about conditions here & wanted to get an understanding of what they intend to do. She seems to think A.A. could do about as well as she ever did, but I'd like to have them take her home with them for a few days and let them see how things are. My time is worth something.

Mon. Cleaned my room. Re-potted plants. Slept a while. Read Sunday's News. Went to P. O. to mail Rachel's letter and get some stamps. Had sausage for dinner and it made me kind of sick all p.m. Jess came while I was eating supper and spent the evening. She has made her will – I ought to. Ede called and is sick again, thinks her blood pressure up.

Tues. 15. Began to make black velvet hat with gold lace on it. Mabel and Edna came – Mabel came upstairs to talk to me about conditions and offered me $5.00 per week to be here and to the buying – what cooking A.A. will let me do and be general overseer. Rained all evening. They came just as dinner was about ready and just after they left Mrs. Gugler came with the quilt that Mrs. Crowell wants quilted and that Jess and I are to mark. I gave her the apron I made – yellow and blue – so we had a late dinner. Mrs. Harriet Princeborn came with the Thank offering envelopes for my group – got my hat, put together and wore it to Jesses at six for her inspection. We marked the quilt. Finished about 9, hard work.

Wed. Rained all day to Lona's all day to quilt. Mrs. Dickie Cummings, Shook, Keffer, Metcalf, Lona, Jess and myself – Jess and I stayed an hour after the others left 6:30 and finished it. I brought it home to bind. I came home at noon to see how things were going. AA got only toast and orange for both dinner and supper. I'll have to cook up something good tomorrow for her.

Thurs. Snowy, snowed nearly all day. Not cold. Uptown to get meat and to look at bargains, but did not get any as was too late – called Anna and Esther and Mrs. Bircky, Edie, and Jess and Sarah Scott and Grace called. Deposit $20 and talked to Fuchs about the $10 drawn out of my account that I can't understand. Bound the quilt. Did not finish until nearly 10 o'clock. Then wrote a birthday letter to Tressa. Stayed while I worked at my hat until three then went uptown and looked a lot of stores over, bought to bought $.10 worth of peanuts and some rubber beads. Met Chloe Styert in 10 cent store. She is sick. Marse sent a box with a dress for Audrey, a good hat, but too small for me or Audrey or her [illegible] – two pairs of silk hose for me – used ones. A pillow top for herself – tapestry – for me to make. Did not get my hat done, although worked until after 10 on it. Must finish it tomorrow, but think it will not take long. Jess called before I went down to breakfast. AA tried to turn the water off, but couldn't. Mabel said we should not do it unless it was very cold, but she did it anyway, if it felt frosty, and had a lot of stuff packed around the kitchen door. I was cross about it as it is so useless, with the felt strip on. I wish it did not make me feel cross when she monkeys around so.

Sat with Jess. AA and I to Fred's [Charles Frederick Hughes] to dinner and supper. Stopped at Christian Church for services 7:30. I got bladder trouble and had to come home before sermon suffered something awful. Went to Rosa's a while. Dick there in afternoon. Some cooler this evening. Wrote to Ad. [Adeline Palmer Hughes Hagerman]

Monday – cooler – worked at Wins fur (Sib's old one). Mended stockings – Mabel and Edna here in p.m. had been to "The Big Parade" at Madison theater – Mabel told me of Steve's salary and high living in New York City – Raised chill. Rosa here to spend evening, Esther going to Philadelphia with Ed and Anna [Clingan] who go to New Jersey. Wednesday to Jessie's for some corn and tomatoes she brought from Horn's for me. John Paul buried at Ashland.

Tuesday finished Ads letter and mailed it at Pavonia where I went with Laura Ferree in the afternoon. To Esther's [Boals Hughes]in evening after wallpaper books. She going at six tomorrow morning, Ethel going to stay alone with a couple in apartment upstairs Edna W. called in evening.

Wednesday, September 21 quite cold, frost in places. Ed, Anna and Esther started at 6:00 on their big trip. I worked on Win's fir [sic] piece and looked up paper for Pavonia kitchen and sent for it $.86 wrote to Mrs. DeRemer. Canned one quart of apples.

Thursday the 22nd, Artie Carr's birthday - 63. Still quite cool. Fixed my blue cloth dress for Win to press. Went to Jessie's at 11:00 for corn Horn's sent, 4 ears - She gave me enough cooked tomatoes she had left from canning for dinner. Win does not care for corn. Slept about 1/2 hr. and was miserable for it. Worked on my black and white voile dress Anna G. [Golladay] gave me. Went up to Ethel's office at 5. Got so nervous that everything worried me. Aunt Art's everlasting whistling and a fellow who works in the plumbing shop whistles nearly all the time. It got on my nerves so I thought I'd get out a while. Went to library and got two books. "The Cathedral" and "American Pictures and Their Painters." Warmer this evening, good long letter from Anna G. at last. Such a sharp neuralgic pain in the left back of my head. Big Tunney – Dempsey fight. Tunney best.

Friday worked on voile dress – Win brought my blue cloth - pressed. To Ede's at to to fix her hat. $.50. Cut out Wins rose slip. Ethel took me to see "The Big Parade" a fine picture – at new Madison. To Jessie's a while at supper time. She doctoring with Dr. Ada Ford. Warmer.

Saturday the 24th a year ago today I went to Lisbon, where I stayed until February 22. This was a fine day. I worked on the lack and white voile and almost finished it. Em Johnson came to see me, but A. A. was at Adams and Em left her bag of grapes and pears with a card. Was very sorry it happened. Must write to her. To Jessie's after supper. We went window shopping for an hour. Ross Glessner brought me home because A. A. did not expect me to stay out. Then he took Jess out to Mame's. Wish I did not have to come in so early. Jess gave me some boiled beef because she is not allowed to eat it.
Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08588165782868985652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114664690307155555.post-5604536562427269242011-04-03T19:05:00.002-04:002011-04-03T19:05:00.793-04:00Sept 11 - 17
Sunday 11 Sept. They took Fred's home, then I went home with them to go to Christian church tonight. Mabel and Edna and Esther came here to go with us., And Jess tried to get me over the 'phone to go with her. It is either feast or famine. Win fooled of going anywhere by Dick, who was mean. I wish she'd get some good fellow who would use her white [sic]. She had a notion of staying all night and not let her mother know where she was. It is too bad that Esther is so inconsiderate of Ethel's feelings, but she always was. Wrote to aunt Ada Bachtel – called Pavonia Parsonage and found that Middleton's go to Fredericktown circuit with for places to preach, but only two sermons each Sunday – easier than Pavonia – live at Waterford – sorry they leave Pavonia – Marian Ward here to say goodbye to A. To Hadley's in evening. Edy up and dressed for the first time for weeks and weeks. Roe Oswalt and family there, also Iva and family came as we started away. We went by Ralph's store – Edna's rather – and they were having a big trade for Sunday evening -- treated us to ice cream and we each bought a magazine I hope she does well. Have not written since Saturday so will begin with:

Sunday the 28th our reunion at N. Park. I started at 12:00 and just missed the fourth streetcar so waited 15 min. and looped the loop to S. Park, thinking the reunion would be there and found my error. Took the car after missing one when almost to it and looped the loop again to North Park. Edna, Ethel and Artie passed me at the Coliseum and had been down after me, and Francis and Mary were also out on the hunt of me. Too bad! 50 there and had a scrumptious dinner, but no supper, good luck! Ed and Anna brought me home and we went on out to the flying field and saw the plane light or land twice and twice take its flight with two passengers. Came home about 7 and A. A. was still away, so I came in and ate some then John and Sadie Dixon came and stayed about an hour. Then Frank brot Anna G at 8:30. Still, A. A. away till 9:30 when Dick brought her home. We should have locked her out as she did us when we stayed no later, but I sat down there and waited for her. Journal suspended publication. Sorry.

Monday the 29th got up late, Win to dinner, then A. G. and I went to Hadley's with a little cake and some ice cream for Ede's birthday dinner. She also got cards from us. Jess, Esther's three and a lot more. She was asleep when we went, but awakened. We then went to Aunt Lou's to stay for supper. Had a very nice visit and supper. Artie came over from Well's to spend evening. Mat Ward has been there three weeks. Aunt Lou not her former self. Sidney's had company, Rev. Brown, W. B. Martin, Mansfield's, Rudd's for waffle supper. Mrs. Rudd and Mrs. Mansfield in after supper. Louise and Mary Rudd brought us home at 9:30 PM.

Tuesday the 30th, invited to Ada's for noon meal and to Edna's to evening meal, but had to decline both. Sorry. Anna went with Louise at 11:00. Win to dinner. Dick brot her and waited while she ate. Esther called to see about forks and napkins so I had to wash napkins. Also, my hair. Went to Jessie's after soft water to wash it. I asked her about Lou's applying for divorce from Marchant. I had heard it but she never had said a word, but told me today the particulars. I sat downstairs and waited for Ralph to bring Anna G. She came before 10:00 and had had a nice day. Grace, Artie, Aunt Lou, Mat W. & Anna there, at Ada's and Martha & Mary at Edna's, besides G.G. & Mrs. McCready, at whose home the dinner was served, in honor of Mary, Edna had entertained Martha at the Women's club in the afternoon. Was sorry I had to miss it all.

Wednesday, August 31. At home until nearly 3, then went uptown to show A. G. Maxwells and Reed stores and found Maxwells closed for Wednesday afternoon but other stores open. We dropped in at the "Park" theater and saw a show, then window shopped and stopped to see Linton. Ed and Anna came to take us to Herman's at 8:00 – stayed till 9:30 – the girls played and Herman Sang. Made arrangements with Jess to pay five cents per week for the news, after she gets it. Read area. She out at to Horn's all day – I sent quarterage to C. W. Robinson. Five dollars. Marse here for a while.

Thurs. September 1 -- Did not sleep well until 4:00 this a.m. so was all in, and as I had made plans to have a dinner for Artie and Mat W. but had to call it off. Etta, Ada and Aunt Lou were to be here also. Artie went back home yesterday, so that spoiled it some – when we went downstairs A. A. was washing, so it would have been almost impossible to have tried to entertain, in the best of health and spirits. Win to dinner. We both slept a little, then Mary came for a while. I to Jessies for a qt. of milk Edward brought her and she had a quart from Horns. She gave me, also, some beats and some stewed elderberries. We went up to Maxwell's and looked the store over, then to pay telephone rent and found the office closed. To A&P for groceries – got supper over then came upstairs about 7:00 and soon went to sleep in my chair. Slept till 9:30 then went to bed, but could not sleep, so got up and am sitting here writing at 11:10 and am not sleepy yet. Anna is not aware that I am up, and the light is shining in her eyes. Blessed sleep like that. She has been snoring it off right along Will read till I get sleepy.

Friday, Sept. 2, Ada called early to take us to Franklin cemetery. Came about noon. Also went to W. B. Martin's cabin in the woods. Home about 3.

Sat. 3 – Mary's wedding day. A fine day until the ceremony was over, then rained a little, but turned out nice at last. A. G. and I went about 2:00 to decorate the house. Ceremony at 4:30. They left at about 5:45. All went to depot with them with rice and old shoes and placards. Back to Esther's till about 9:00. Ethel came as far as the PO with us to mail 125 announcements . Ralph and Edna bought the Marty Hogan drugstore and took possession after the wedding was all over.

Got awake early and with such a dazed feeling that I was frightened. Could not remember anything. So was afraid to go to church or stay alone so went to Esther's about 10. Was there until nearly 9 PM. Ethel came part of the way home with me. Ethel is good and so unselfish. AA to church, then home with Mabel and Edna. Dale took them out to Sam's. He is in bad shape. Charlie sent a man, wife and child to live with them. Ed called to know if I wanted to go to Frend's little girl's funeral this afternoon, but I did not feel well enough.

I felt like a fool taking it, but guess I should not feel so. Went with Edy to Engwiller's to get her glasses and made a date for tomorrow morning for myself. We then went to Carlisle's furniture sale. Came home at five and made my yellow plaid and gray gingham dress. Am wearing it tonight. Aunt Art sneered at it and went over her old sarcastic remarks about people needing glasses. She says if people never began to wear them, they would never have to do it. I was provoked at her this afternoon and I guess she knew it. New paragraph.

Guyler's got their porch fixed up for summer. Wish I had enough of it that they do not see, to hold a chair. Called Aunt Lou to tell her of Mrs. Lewis's visit. She seemed to think I had as much as Grace to live on, or at least was feeling sorry for Grace that she had it more, when I think she has enough for a good home and a living besides a vocation that will bring her a good living right along. So I had the blues worst that ever. I was so lonely. I nearly went up.
